A typical eye examination in the United Kingdom is a series of tests performed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist assessing vision and ability to focus on and discern objects (sometimes done by first using two eyes to read a chart from a certain distance, then the process is repeated twice more but this time with one eye closed, alternating) as well as other tests and examinations pertaining to the eyes. Everyone should should have periodic and thorough eye examinations as part of routine primary care, especially since many eye diseases are silent or asymptomatic.

Eye examinations can help us in many ways, it may detect potentially treatable blinding eye diseases, ocular manifestations of systemic disease, or signs of tumors or other anomalies of the brain.

Some employers in the United Kingdom require staff, within certain job roles, an annual eye exam. Below is a sample the common types of eye tests which maybe required for staff by some UK companies:
